SurfCleaner attracts funding from Swedish House Mafia music artist
SurfCleaner’s solutions eliminate all types of pollution from water surfaces including oil, litter, microplastics, floating sludge, debris and more. With this in mind, Axwell, entrepreneur and member of Swedish House Mafia, partners up and invests in the company.
Inspired by the pumping principles of the heart, InnoEnergy supported start-up SurfCleaner has set out to make a positive impact on the future of oceans and rivers worldwide and is the latest step in developing a solution to tackle global water pollution. The application eliminates all types of pollution from water surfaces including oil, litter, microplastics, floating sludge, debris and more. With this in mind, Axwell, entrepreneur and member of Swedish House Mafia, partners up and invests in the company.
“I’ve had my eyes on SurfCleaner for a while”, says Axwell. “I want to contribute to smart solutions and companies that can have a real impact on the environment, and help creating a more sustainable world. For me, it’s important to give back to the society, and to contribute in the ways I can to help reduce the effects of CO2 emissions and global warming.”
Mikael Andersson, CEO at SurfCleaner further comments on the partnership: “We are very happy to have Axwell on board. He will help us promote our vision and products, and has already come up with some great ideas on how to spread the word about SurfCleaner’s benefits around the globe. One idea that we will launch in the future is the ‘Adopt a SurfCleaner’ project, where responsible people can invest in a share of a unique SurfCleaner, that will roam the oceans, cleaning them from plastic litter. The SurfCleaners’ position, cleaning volume, and more data will be available in an app – connecting all SurfCleaner supporters to each other. But more about that later”, Mikael concludes with a smile.
SurfCleaner is a proven technology with over 30 in operation cleaning up oil and diesel spills for the Swedish Coast Guard, industrial ports, and oil refineries in Sweden, Norway and Netherlands. The start-up joined InnoEnergy’s Boostway® last year to gain support for the final stages of commercialisation. “SurfCleaner has the potential of creating a significant impact worldwide in tackling water pollution issues and it is very motivating to collaborate with them”, says Markus Berglund, Business Creation Manager at InnoEnergy. “Knowing that the efforts and support that we have provided to strengthen the business case contributed in attracting this funding is very rewarding. I look forward to further successful achievements along the way.”
SurfCleaner is now working on addressing three +$1 billion market segments, all suffering from substantial issues with pollutants floating on water surfaces:
- The oil water separation market – managing oil spills in industrial processes as well as oil spills from accidents at sea, where separating oil from water today is a costly and complicated process.
- The waste water treatment market – in plants where sludge and foam is a problem in several steps of the industrial process. Today this process is inefficiently managed manually or with chemical treatment.
- The surface debris (plastics) removal market – collecting and separating surface debris in rivers, ports and seas close to its source in a way alternative solutions cannot do today.
